INTRODUCTION

Blakademy is running a series of workshops to support First Nations (Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander/Blak and People of Colour) artists in applying for grants and other funding opportunities. The four workshops, held over two weekends, will provide practical skills and support for artists or collectives to apply for grants.  These are designed to empower Indigenous artists, many of who may lack the skills to commit their ideas to writing and to be able to set these in the formats required by funding bodies.  Artists are asked to bring along an idea for a project which they intend to seek funding for and Blakademy will provide support, skills, expertise and encouragement for you to get it done.

BACKGROUND

Blakademy offers a dedicated critical Indigenous learning space for First Nations Creatives and a home for First Nations community collectives. A space run by us for us.  Blakademy is Australia’s first dedicated Blak and People of Colour library with the objective of compiling the most comprehensive collection of Indigenous and POC Books, Academic writings and oral histories, stories, films etc and making them available for our communities. Housing a large collection of global and local Indigenous and non-European diasporic texts (catalogues, monographs, anthologies, magazines) as well as hot desks for study or group workshops, reading and writing and community meeting space.  A shared understanding that storytelling for First Nations isn’t just the written word but is everything: weaving; dancing; spoken stories; film; and music. Here we enable our community to tell their own stories and narratives.

The process for applying for and receiving grants is complex and can be overwhelming for artists.  Feedback from a number of funding bodies also indicates there are problems in assessing applications which lack detail, lack focus or contain too much information. There seems to be a large gulf between the capacity of artists to complete and submit applications and the expectations of funding bodies who make decisions about grants. These workshops are intended to bridge the skills and knowledge gap required for successful grant applications.

WHO CAN APPLY?

First Nations (Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander/Blak and People of Colour) individual artists or collectives can apply.  Each applicant should have an idea or project for which they intend to seek funding as this will form the basis for each workshop.

WHAT TO BRING?

An idea for a project, examples of your work (if possible), a personal computer or device for working on your project.  The participants may be asked to bring additional materials over the course of the workshops in order to be able to make the most of the experts.

HOW TO APPLY?

Limited spaces - applications closing Monday 10th July 5pm

This should include artist name, contact details, a statement about their practice and the idea to seek grant funding for.

To get the most out of this workshop we need you or one person from your collective to commit to each workshop across the four days.
