Are you a First Nations digital media artist with an idea that pushes creative boundaries? Got an idea you’re eager to bring to life? This is your moment! Blak Dot Gallery’s 2025 Digital Media Residency offers an incredible chance to dive into your practice with full access to professional resources, a dedicated studio, and personalized support from our team.

What’s on Offer:

  • Artist Fee: $5,000 to support your project development.

  • Studio Access: Fully-equipped media room with an Apple Studio Display (27-inch) & Mac mini (M2), Adobe Suite, and additional equipment to fuel your experimentation.

  • Mentorship & Guidance: Work closely with our team to refine your ideas and develop a powerful final presentation.

The Opportunity: Immerse yourself in a six-month journey to explore, create, and bring bold, experimental work to life in our gallery. Whether you're developing something brand new or reimagining an existing piece, we’re excited to showcase daring, tech-driven art that explores themes like social and political issues, future visions, climate change, and beyond. Let your creativity push boundaries and inspire change!

Whether you work with digital installations, interactive media, virtual environments, or video art, if your vision is bold and boundary-pushing, we want to hear from you!

This residency/incubation period is an opportunity to work with us on the development of your idea, project, with support to apply for more funding to support your vision if required.

Submissions will be reviewed by a selection panel and notified mid February,2025.



DETAILS

Recipients will receive the following from BD:

  • Artist Fee of $5000

  • Access to BDG's facilities + equipment as required for the residency and exhibition

  • Exhibition of the completed work in Blak Dot’s new gallery space.

  • Technical support for installation

Exhibition or Presentation

Recipients will have their work exhibited in Blak Dot Gallery programming for one month that will include an opening reception and photo documentation of the work.

Eligibility

  • Work will be site-specific and must respond to and/or utilize the gallery space.

  • Works in progress are eligible provided they will be adapted to suit the space.

  • Works produced for school are not eligible.

  • Commercial projects are not eligible.

  • While narrative works are eligible, BDG prioritizes projects that are experimental in nature or expand the medium beyond a single-channel experience.

Submission Requirements

Applicants must provide Blak Dot Gallery  with one completed online application and ALL supporting materials must be received by 5pm on the deadline date.

PROJECT PROPOSAL:
Provide a synopsis of the proposed project (including: working title, duration and medium) – no more then 500 words - and a visual/sound treatment detailing how the project will be realized.

Panel should get a clear sense of what the finished piece will be, how it utilizes the gallery space and a rough draft of what equipment you will need from BDG.

RESUME/CV:
Should detail relevant artistic experience of the applicant (not to exceed 2 pages.)

SUPPORT MATERIAL:
BDG accepts digital applications only via the application form.

Support materials shall be limited to:

  • Up to 5 images

  • 2 video samples: include URL link to video works (ensure link is functioning properly). Not to exceed 10 minutes total. If part of a longer work, please indicate the time where you would like the panel to start

  • Include a clear list indicating the support material and its relevance to the proposal

Conditions

Each individual is required to adhere to the following:

  • The recipient must pursue the project as proposed. Any dramatic deviation in the project's content must be cleared with the Programming Manager

  • Projects must be completed in time to be included in the final exhibition.

  • Projects must credit Blak Dot Gallery in this and all future iterations.

  • The recipient may be required to submit a final report summarizing their experiences in the program: how it has benefitted the work and how it can be improved.
