AROUND THE BLOCK

WINTER NIGHT SCREENS 2026

IT’S COMING TO THAT TIME OF THE YEAR,

WHERE we’re firing things up with moving image!

We are teaming up again with our neighbours and partners Next Wave, Merri-bek Council’s Michelle Guglielmo Park, Counihan Gallery and the Brunswick Library to create our outdoor screening series and walking tours.

From poetic reflections to the wonderfully weird, each piece will be crafted, specifically for the round format

— inviting passersby to pause, peer in, and experience moving image in a whole new way.

🎥 Winter NIGHT SCREENS 2026:

Artist Call-out

We’re calling out to First Nations artists working in video or moving image to be part of Winter Night Screens, a unique six-week screening series that transforms not only our main glass entrance into a circular portal but also expanding to include the House for storytelling and experimentation.

There’s no set theme; we just ask that your work be considered to be designed to display in a round format if chosen.

Think beyond the square; go circular, go bold, get weird. We welcome experimentation and imagination!

What’s the deal?

  • We’re selecting six artists to feature one work each over a two-week rotation.

  • Screenings run Thursday to Sunday evenings (twilight onward).

  • Works will be displayed on the House and in a circular frame visible from the street.

Selected artists receive:

✔ An artist fee

✔ Tech + installation support

✔ A launch event + potential for another programmed event

Tech specs:

  • New or recent (within 6 months) video or moving image works no longer the 5mins

  • Basic audio playback available (silent works also welcome)

  • Must consider it to be also formatted for a round display (measurements to be provided)

  • Final delivery in MP4 via USB or digital transfer (eg. WeTransfer)

Applications close: MAY 1

Artists notified: June 4

Whether you’re crafting something new or adapting a recent work, we’re looking for fresh, daring perspectives:

on community, culture, climate, futures, politics …wherever your vision leads.

We love to get the fire pit going, let’s light up the block 🔥
