We regret to advise that Electric Fields will not perform at this Saturday’s Saxon Street Closing Party due to illness. However we are delighted to announce that the incredible Thndo, Tiana Khasi and Philly will be joining the live music line-up in their place. We can’t wait to see you there!

Blak Dot Gallery and Siteworks in Brunswick present SAXON STREET CLOSING PARTY – a celebration of Community with a deadly line-up of cultural performances and First Nations musicians. Blak Dot Gallery and Siteworks are on the precipice of redevelopment, with a state-of-the-art creative and community hub coming in 2024.

SAXON STREET is our closing party prior to the redevelopment, featuring live performances by Culture Evolves, Thndo, Kutcha Edwards, Miss Kaninna, Laitsi, Tiana Khasi and Philly with DJ Planet Tonga, Sounds of Polynesia, Mau Rākau, Wayra Muru and Lemony S Puppet Theatre.There will also be activities, an artist market with over 30 stallholders, cultural performances, workshops, open studios, a kids roller disco, food trucks and more!

Join Blak Dot Gallery and Siteworks as we celebrate the wonderful artists, communities and connections created and welcome what these spaces will hold in the future as our site is redeveloped!

LIVE MUSIC

THNDO

The widely loved Zimbabwean-born ‘First Lady of Soul and R&B’ Every performance is a statement – a triumph of powerful lyricism, rich-ranged vocals and smooth backing instrumentation – turning onward the wheel of live music, show by show. With the release of her second EP Life in Colour touches on thndo’s experiences of growing up black in Australia. Struggles with displacement, discrimination and a deeper understanding of black pride are interwoven with R&B, Hip Hop and Afrobeat’s elements to continue the narrative of her smash hit single Numb.

KUTCHA EDWARDS

Award-winning Mutti Mutti songwriter and activist, Kutcha Edwards uses music to create connections across cultures and generations. Known for his successful Screen Australia web series Kutcha’s Carpool Koorioke, Kutcha is currently touring with his new album Circling Time.

TIANA KHASI

Melbourne-based future soul artist Tiana Khasi’s debut EP, Meghalaya, is a powerful statement of intent that honours her Samoan and Indian heritage. In a moment of reclamation in music, Tiana’s community-led approach and innate ability to integrate past experiences to shape new future sounds is not only what sets her apart, but will continue to carry her music forward.

LAITSI

From Malawi in Southeastern Africa, LAITSI (pronounced Light-See) is a rap artist now based in Adelaide on Kaurna Land. LAITSI shares his truth and deep connection with music through hip-hop, rap, trap, deep house, pop, acoustic, and indie to create a better life for himself, his family, and the crew around him.

MISS KANINNA

A proud Yorta-Yorta, Yirendali and Kalkadoon woman, Miss Kaninna was born and raised in lutruwita/Tasmania. Hailing from a strong family of performers, artists and creators, Miss Kaninna carries forward the line of storytelling from the past, to the future. She boldly shares her Blak experience as a young woman, in so-called Australia.

PHILLY

Award-winning artist Philly was born during the golden era of hip-hop. The first song he could remember was Naughty by Nature’s ‘Hip Hop Hooray’ – Philly’s destiny was set. He began writing rhymes & rapping in public and soon became a hip hop sensation in his hometown Mildura. Philly is determined to continue to use his voice to make change and inspire young people.
