HumaNature is a reminder that within everybody lives a garden. It aims to embody a universal experience: that of belonging to a wider fabric, where human and nature beat in the same rhythm. It also invites us to think of our human identity as a bridge between the intimate and the cosmic, as an identity that dissolves into nature, beyond the geographical land where we come from.

These series of artworks explore the inseparable relationship between human beings and nature.  The work proposes a human body that is also a landscape:  faces, feet and hands that become territory; hair that blooms like an untamed jungle.  In some portraits, the skin opens in fragments to reveal inner worlds: skies, mountains, cracked soils, and memories that germinate and emerge in the form of flowers.  Each fragment is a reminder that we are multiple, that we exist in constant metamorphosis. Identity, then, is not understood as a fixed surface, but as fertile matter in permanent transformation.  The cracks, cuts, and assemblages in the compositions speak of wounds, but also of reconstructions, of the possibility of reinventing oneself, of reassembling and growing again.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

María Peña is an Australian-Colombian visual artist currently based in Melbourne. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Painting and Ceramics from Academia Superior de Artes in Bogotá and Master of Fine Arts (by Research) from RMIT University, Melbourne.  Her career spans both Australia and Colombia, developed through exhibitions, artist residency programs and mural projects. To date, she has exhibited in solo and group shows across Colombia, Australia, Mexico, India, Argentina, New York and the United Arab Emirates, while completing mural commissions in Australia and Colombia since 2020.
