Exhibition dates: 6 - 28 September 2025
In Māori mythology, Rarohenga is a captivating subterranean realm where the spirits of the deceased dwell. Contrary to common beliefs about such places, Rarohenga is often portrayed as a sanctuary of peace and radiant light. Governed by Hine-nui-te-pō, the goddess of death and night, this mystic realm is also home to an array of guardians, gods, goddesses, and luminous beings.
Throughout history, we’ve been conditioned to believe that upon crossing from the realm of the living to the spirit world, we either rise or descend. But what if the spirit world exists right before our eyes, simply vibrating at a frequency we cannot perceive?
Much of our identity and choices are influenced by the understanding that one day, we will transition to another existence, carrying the hope that we have cultivated enough goodness to discover our own sanctuary of peace beyond the veil.
Yet, within this journey, we confront the demons of grief - fear, hatred, depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. How can we navigate these shadows while exploring the light of Rarohenga and the beauty it offers?
Join us in this exhibition as we delve into the profound essence of Rarohenga, bridging the gap between our existence and the unseen world, and ultimately transforming our understanding of life, death, and everything in between.
