GALLERY 2

A Conch Choir

This collaborative work turns the gallery space into an installation made up of objects and a listening chamber to immerse yourself within. The artistic investigation starts from thinking about the musical, and culturally reverberant sound of the conch. The artists explore amplification and the echoic through an intricate, intuitive and inhabitable sound work or as they candidly refer to it as a conch choir. Lucreccia’s interest in the conch comes from having grown up in Central America and developing an interest from childhood in the continuity of the conch as an instrument and its sounds which range in use from the musical, to a call to gather  within her cultural context as well as many many others around the world Nina brings her interest in histories of sound technologies and methods of improvisation with the other than human. This work comes from a shared interest in storytelling through sound, melody and experimentation.

Artists Bio

Lucreccia Quintanilla and Nina Buchanan first collaborated in 2021, where they brought together Buchanan’s interest in melodic improvisations and Quintanilla’s approach to sampling and sonic collage to create complex and intricate compositions that tell stories and create spaces to inhabit through sounds. These ideas are fed through a shared interest in science fiction and the creation of new worlds.
